A fond farewell to Rick...

Richard C. McCandless, “Rick”, husband, brother, uncle, friend, was set free from the burden of COPD in the early hours of Saturday, October 5th. He is survived by his wife, Sally; his brother, Robert; many nieces and nephews; and a legion of friends across Canada, the United States, and Australia.
After completion of his Masters at Queen’s University, Rick had a long and distinguished career as a senior civil servant in the British Columbia Government. In retirement, he developed a second career as an essayist and commentator in print and on radio on public affairs especially on public accounts, BC Hydro, and ICBC.
Rick was a student of BC history and visual arts. He was never happier than when he was aboard the MV Uchuck III in Nootka Sound on which he worked as a summer job during his education. He returned to the Uchuck many times over the years; his last voyage was just weeks before his death.
Sally is profoundly grateful to Dr. Bosman and the medical staff at Saanich Peninsula and Victoria General Hospitals for their compassionate care of Rick and of her during his final illness.
To become a friend of Rick McCandless was a life sentence. He never forgot a friend and was tireless in ensuring that connections were not broken. Fond memories will continue to keep those connections alive for all who knew him.
